R1: Use principally as a fuel or other means to generate energy
Annex II of the consolidated Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) opens in a new tab.
Notes from the annex
- For dedicated municipal solid waste incinerators, R1 applies only where the plant meets the energy-efficiency thresholds (0.60 for plants permitted before 1 January 2009; 0.65 for plants permitted after 31 December 2008) calculated using the R1 formula in Annex II.
Applying this code
D and R codes describe the operation, not the waste itself and not site acceptance.
Classify the waste first using the Waste classification technical guidance (WM3) — GOV.UK opens in a new tab, then check permit conditions before applying a code operationally.
